Sometimes I can feel ‘down’ for no logical reason, or for a very small one, as for instance when I lost a set of keys last week. I felt thoroughly annoyed with myself and generally useless in a futile kind of way. I kept out of other people’s way sensing that I would do no-one any good in that mood. Frustrated and rummaging around I came on a cutting from Ronald Rolheiser’s column which I had saved: Give yourself permission to be inadequate!
On calming down, a bit of reflection suggested where the lost keys might be, and so I found them. I had got all irritated for nothing. Rolheiser’s advice for the New Year is salutary at any time. He continues: “Both God and nature give you permission not to be perfect. Don’t be too hard on yourself and especially, on others. Everyone falls short. God doesn’t keep you from falling and failing, but redeems you when you do fall. You’re loved as you are. Fear not, you are inadequate!”
