The Mary Potter tram traverses the streets of Nottingham today, making it’s way, as she did in 1877, out to Hyson Green, the cradle of the Little Company of Mary. In the heritage house lovingly tended by Sr Lynn, we peered at the founder’s tiny travel slippers, and wondered at the cold journeys of these small feet, long before trams, when times were hard indeed. She came to see Bishop Bagshawe with no luggage at all, only the dream of which she was sure. God wanted a new religious order...

A woman came to a wise rabbi for help. She was depressed and in grief after a bereavement and poured out her sorrow to the holy man. The rabbi only commented mildly that it was very cold. He suggested therefore, that she go around the neighbouring houses and collect some firewood. Then they could sit down and discuss her sad predicament. He told her however, not to ask for wood at any house where sorrow had been experienced by the family.
